Helmut Lang cut-out vest from S/S 2002. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy.

Vogue.com's Laird Borelli described Lang's S/S 2002 collection as 'mixing romanticism, sex, and science, [balancing] flesh-baring cutouts and bondage-style harnesses with Great Gatsby-style femininity.' At first glance, clean silhouettes and a largely monochromatic palette give the impression of a certain simplicity. Upon a closer inspection, however, it becomes evident that there was nothing simplistic about this collection. Hard and soft were balanced throughout the show: the sueded texture of perch (fish) leather was juxtaposed with the pristine structure of shiny patent leather, and intricately layered transparent silks were paired with linear outerwear. Cut outs and Lang's iconic deconstructed skeleton garments created fluid lines on the wearers' bodies.

Simply constructed yet luxurious and visually striking, this top features one of the collection's signature cut-out shapes. The hemline has been curved and shifted upwards on the front, creating an elliptical shape that beautifully accentuates the waist. Besides being exhibited in several runway looks for S/S 2002, this concept can traced back to Lang's S/S 1996 collection, and was also reiterated for the celebrated S/S 2004. It is a beautiful touch that will work well for both men and women, worn on its own or layered.

The piece is crafted from luxurious cotton jersey with a soft, silky texture and considerable stretch. The fabric has a mercerised treatment that gives it a faint luster. Furthermore, its high thread count results in a pleasantly rich and smooth texture while ensuring that it will maintain its softness and colour for longer. The neckline and armholes are precisely finished with self-fabric binding.

Exquisite in its simplicity, this beautifully crafted basic will make a refined visual statement that is quintessential Lang.
