A/W 2003 is seen by many as Helmut Lang's definitive 'bondage' collection. A diverse variety of inspirations -ranging from airforce uniforms and Vivienne Westwood's Seditionaries to classic evening tailoring- were refined into a unique collection that combined subcultural aggression with refined sartorialism. The season's conceptually rich designs have become part of contemporary fashion history, influencing a wide range of designers in the process. This gas mask-style bag channels the collection's subversive aesthetic with its asymmetric construction, abstract military-inspired detailing and all-black colourway.
The bag's design is mainly inspired by the M-61 gas mask bag, a surplus accessory once used by the Finnish Defence Forces. The front side has a flap that secures with two snap buttons and three large zippers, all of which feature leather pull tabs stamped with the Helmut Lang logo. The back features a single zipped unit, a large D-ring and an aviator-inspired circular opening. The sides of the bag are framed by thick grosgrain cotton tape secured by metal studs and heavy X-shaped topstitching. This reinforces the bag's structure while allowing for various objects to be attached to its exterior. The adjustable carrying strap is made from the same material.
Unlike its military ancestor, the bag is realised in high quality calf nappa leather with moderate grains and a soft texture. The leather features a light coating that makes it hard-wearing and waterproof. All hardware is has a matte gunmetal finish that complements the dark aesthetic of the design. The interior is fully lined in black flat weave cotton and features two zipped pockets.
