Helmut Lang held several license agreements for the production and distribution of Lang's designs from 1988 until the label's demise. One of the most interesting was the partnership with Onward Kashiyama* to create a range of bags and travel accessories exclusively for the Japanese market. Entirely manufactured in Japan to an exceptionally high standard, the collection was largely inspired by military surplus gear and clubbing accessories and realised in hard-wearing materials such as ballistic nylon and heavy coated leather. Designed with utility and performance in mind, this distinctive day bag features an abundance of adjustable parts and storage pockets.
The front features two large zipped pockets, one of which features a textured Helmut Lang logo. An adjustable strap made of thick grosgrain tape can be used to carry the bag on one's shoulders like a classic messenger bag: the strap attaches on metal hoops that are found throughout the exterior, allowing the bag to be carried vertically or horizontally. When in the latter position, a chunky belt on the back of the bag can be used to secure it to the wearer's waist. The belt can be extended to be used a shoulder strap. Alternatively, a padded handle on the side allows for the bag to be carried like a briefcase.
Besides being highly functional, the bag is expertly constructed with beautiful attention to detail. Reinforced piping gives definition to the edges of the bag, while all interior seams are finished with white grosgrain binding. Likewise, the waist belt is reinforced by painted metal eyelets. The messenger strap features heavy snap hooks while all zippers have chunky branded pull tabs. A smaller snap hook can be used to ensure that the zippers of the main compartment remain closed. When open, the bag reveals two elastic bands (that can be used to contain a laptop or documents), a metal hoop for keys and a zipped pocket. The fully lined interior is finished with a polished metal plaque that has been precisely engraved with the Helmut lang logo.
A characteristic Helmut Lang accessory, this medium-sized bag is ideal for work or play. Besides being extremely practical, its utilitarian design adds a strong point of visual interest.
*Onwards's ties with Helmut Lang date back to late 1994, when their Italian subsidiary GIBO' Co. S.p.A became responsible for the manufacture of Helmut Lang's mainline and Onward Kashiyama USA acting as the distributor of Lang's brand in the US.
