2010 Vintage Twill Workwear Trousers with Snake Embroidery

Carrying on the masculine atmosphere of A/W 2009, the S/S 2010 'Snake' collection focused on the more mature and understated dimensions of the Raf Simons man. Consistent, precise and thoroughly pristine, the presentation brought military sartorialism to the forefront: sport jackets clinched in by large belts, wide shoulderlines and straight-legged trousers were realised in a conservative palette of navy, khaki and grey. The result was sober and straightforward. In the words of Cathy Horyn:

'[Simons] wanted to define himself, or separate himself from the pack. He wants to be absolutely clear, and that was expressed in the precision of the styling and the clothes. Everything looked impeccable, from the models’ haircuts—and the way their faces suited the clothes—to the quality of the belts and shoes. And, again, he emphasized silhouette (with the drawn-in waist)—something he has done for several seasons.'

These trousers have the collection's signature cut, with a fitted seat and a long straight leg with large cuffed hems. The silhouette is simple and elongated, and quietly reminds us of Simons's earlier raver-inspired straight trousers. The right back pocket features an ornate logo embroidery consisting of a large 'R' surrounded by the season's iconic snake to form an 'S'. Beautifully executed and visually distinctive, this logo was one of the season's hallmark details and appears to be inspired by school uniform crests. Contrasting oversized zippers add an avant-garde element to the refined piece.

The trousers' design is an amalgamation of military and workwear styles, and features an abundance of well-thought-out details. The fabric is a cotton twill in a beautiful petrol blue/grey hue with minor variations due to fading. Densely woven and lightweight, the high quality cloth is pleasant to touch and ideal for the warmer seasons. The front fly has a concealed closure and large quarter pockets, while the back is constructed like jeans with yoke panels. The belt loops have an elegant double construction reminiscent of 19th century safari uniforms. The interior is finished to a high standard using bound seams.

Beautifully cut and detailed in line with Raf Simons's highly sophisticated approach, these trousers have the potential to become a spring/summer essential that will complement a variety of outfits.
