A/W 1999-2000 is seen by many as one of Helmut Lang's most groundbreaking seasons, whose directional pieces are just as relevant today as when they were designed. Inspired by astronaut uniforms, motorcycle safety gear and rave subcultures, Lang created a subversively elegant and uncompromisingly modern universe. Helmut Lang was the first designer to adapt protective biker elements for his tailored designs. His biker-inspired work has inspired a long list of designers, from household names like Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière, Balmain's Christophe Decarnin and Burberry Prorsum's Christopher Bailey to avant-garde pioneers like Raf Simons and Rick Owens. This pair of biker trousers was one of the collection's signature pieces, and was worn by both men and women.
Interestingly, Helmut Lang was also the first to experiment with resin-coated denim, before Hedi Slimane or Martin Margiela. The trousers are made from Helmut's signature heavyweight denim that has been coated with polyurethane after their construction, resulting in a directional waxed appearance with beautiful texture variations. Having sold many similarly treated items by Lang, we have observed that the material only gets better with age, with the treatment becoming more defined through wear and creasing.
The trousers have a slim cut with a narrow leg. They have an impressive three-dimensional shape, and exhibit a multitude of signature Helmut Lang detailing. The knees feature rows of biker-inspired ribbing and darts, which produce an articulated silhouette that follows the lines of the body. The waist features Helmut Lang's signature strap adjusters, with chunky oxidized silver hardware. The back pockets and ankles are finished heavy metal zips. The front pockets are made from the same panel as the waistband and front leg, demonstrating Lang's excellent patternwork inspired by traditional workwear trousers.
A close inspection reveals that the trousers' expertly finished interior is just as impressive as the exterior. The panelled areas on the legs are actually padded like real biker trousers, while the crotch features an additional protective lining panel. The waist features Lang's iconic concealed change pocket and multiple straps for hanging. All seams are expertly finished with tonal tape binding to prevent fraying and the pockets are lined in black textured fabric. The fly closes with a zip, a concealed snap and a button to prevent uneven stretching. Overall, the attention to detail of these trousers is exceptional.
