Burberry Prorsum biker trousers from S/S 2003. In excellent used condition. Made in Italy. RRP: £795

S/S 2003 was Christopher Bailey's third collection for Burberry. With his vision for the House in the making, the designer opted for sophisticated separates that combined Burberry's military outerwear traditions with high-tech sportswear and contemporary streetwear. It was the first time Bailey cited biker garments as an inspiration, setting the aesthetic precedent for several Prorsum creations up to this day. Although the show's styling was undoubtedly more casual than Burberry's more famous collections that followed -and more akin to Burberry Brit's youthful aesthetic- the designs presented were sophisticated and refined. Indeed, Bailey's transgressive mix of old and new as well as his typical emphasis on luxurious detail were strongly present, and his bright future at Burberry was already perceptible.

These trousers were showcased in numerous runway looks and were one of the season's most iconic pieces. Their design was adapted for men for the S/S 2011 collection (see final photograph), further establishing their position as a quintessential Burberry piece. Featuring an intricately panelled construction inspired by military and biker garments, the trousers are a strong example of the commitment to craftsmanship embraced by Burberry Prorsum since Roberto Menichetti's initial tenure as Prorsum's head designer.

Realised in a smooth pure silk satin, the trousers have a flattering form-fitting cut with a narrow straight leg. The luxurious silk fabric's dull luster highlights the abundance of thoughtful details: The front has two large pockets with chunky zippers that lend an aggressive edge to the piece. Likewise, the legs are finished with long adjustable straps featuring oversized D-rings. On the the knees and inner thighs, linear details inspired by protective garments shape the engineered silhouette. Finally, the upper back is defined by a reinforced round panel.

The trousers are constructed to an exceptional standard as expected. All hardware pieces are custom with a gunmetal finish that complements the directional design, and feature subtle Burberry Prorsum engravings. The zippers are made by Lampo in Italy. Several parts of the trousers are double layered to ensure that their structure is maintained while protecting the precious fabric. The finishing is superb, with tonal tape used to reinforce the majority of seams. The fly closes with a zipper and two antique buttons. Overall, the craftsmanship of the trousers is easily perceptible upon a close inspection.

This piece is a bold testament to the timeless relevance of Christopher Bailey's early designs for Burberry, which are just as groundbreaking as when first showcased. Strongly reccomended.
