2001 Neoprene-Bonded Kid Leather Ankle Boots with Harness

In line with the nuanced and sensual aesthetic of Lang's tailoring, Helmut Lang footwear features timeless yet edgy silhouettes that combine groundbreaking materials with a clear focus on quality and traditional craftsmanship. For A/W 2001, Lang focused his efforts on formal tailoring. Armand Limnander writes:

'Die-hard fans of sleek power dressing will find plenty of sharp, no-nonsense basics at Helmut Lang come Fall. After Spring's sex-driven tour de force, the Austrian designer has gone for a more sober approach, referencing some of his own early work in the process. Lang's mostly black collection revolved around many of his well-known classics: Fitted blazers, narrow trousers and sharp-edged coats continue to work as a modern urban uniform. Lang added some eye-catching touches like [...] policeman-like holsters that curled around the shoulder on empire slips.'

The collection's no-nonsense aesthetic was emphasized by stark, clean-shaped shoes that gave a polished edge to the low key outfits. Upon a closer inspection it was evident that the streamlined silhouettes were not at all simplistic, elevated by unexpected finishes and Lang's considerable attention to detail. 

These distinctive ankle boots are crafted from kid (baby goat) leather. Kidskin is a luxurious leather of exceptional quality that is typically used for gloves; its surface has beautiful small grains and a luscious texture. Its interior side has been bonded to neoprene foam that gives it a futuristic structured finish with some stretch. The shoes' narrow form closely follows the curves of the foot for a sleek and sensual silhouette that is beautifully exaggerated by an architectural pointed toe (a Helmut Lang footwear signature) and narrow stiletto heels. The sculptural design is finished with a semi-detached patent leather harness that encases the ankles to make a strong yet refined statement.

The shoes' unique design is undoubtedly matched by the quality of their construction. The toe and heel areas are realised in polished patent leather to enhance the structural integrity of the piece while creating subtle contrast. Likewise, the sole is traditionally constructed using polished leather and a solid metal stem for the heel. This uncommon feature allows for a very narrow heel structure without compromising on structure. The harness has a velcro closure, while the shaft is finished with chain stitching reminiscent of the construction of diving suits. The interior is fully lined in glove leather and neoprene.

These exquisitely crafted boots are an exemplary demonstration of Lang's coveted footwear. Merging classic lines with a timelessly modern aesthetic, they will become a staple piece in any directional collection.
