S/S 2008 was one of Burberry's most groundbreaking seasons, showcasing Christopher Bailey's unforeseen affinity for technical materials. Inspired by surfing garments and Burberry's venerable heritage as a developer of outerwear materials, the collection presented several iconic pieces and fabrics that have been used in many Prorsum collections ever since. This statement piece is realised in the season's iconic neoprene fabric, and its intricate construction is truly something to behold.
In a beautiful burgundy/purple hue, the neoprene material is structured and stretchy with a smooth hand. Like most Burberry outerwear fabrics it is completely waterproof. Its flexibility gives comfort to the peacoat's fitted silhouette, with strong shoulders, slim sleeves and a tapered waist. The fine tailored cut is the result of an multi-panelled construction which gives a handsome geometrical sharpness to the waist area. Likewise, the back has elaborate curvilinear and angular panels that follow the lines of the body.
The front closes with 24 snap buttons that are closely positioned for a sharp look, and features a rectangular cut-out at the lower waist. The neck has a stand-up collar with a tab. All buttons are Italian made and have a polished black finish that complements the sport-inspired aesthetic. The waist features two flap pockets, while the back has a double vent. All seams are reinforced with luggage stitching for enhanced structure. The interior is fully lined in a technical woven polyester, and features an exquisite gold macramé trim around the edges. The neckline is finished with woven gold hanging loop, one of the season's signature details.
